Launching our website on Earth Day is a no-brainer. It reflects the philosophy underlying our decisions to dramatically shift our families from a consumption to a conservation lifestyle—decisions which were born out of our mutual desire to reduce our impact on the environment.
Currently, the 25 percent of the global population in first-world countries use 75 percent of the world’s resources. This statistic is staggering, especially considering the human population has tripled in the last century. Our planet simply cannot sustain the level of consumption we in the first world have gotten use to.
Earth Day was founded in the United States by Gaylord Nelson, a former U.S. Senator from Wisconsin. After witnessing the damaging effects of the 1969 Santa Barbara oil spill in California, he took steps to launch the modern-day environmental movement.
Coast to coast, rallies in support of a sustainable environment were held on April 22, 1970. The event was an extraordinary achievement bringing together Republicans and Democrats and over 20 million participants across the United States. The success of the inaugural Earth Day helped spur the creation of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the passage of the Clean Air, Clean Water and Endangered Species Acts.
When Canada joined in 1990, Earth Day had the support of 141 countries and 200 million individuals. Today, over one billion people in 192 countries participate in Earth Day activities, making it the planet’s largest civic celebration.
Our hope is for our children to grow up in a sustainable world. Change in support of greater sustainability must happen and is happening. PAREdown and its website is dedicated to making this change happen a little faster. By working toward a goal of zero waste, we believe we can bring the philosophy of Earth Day to every day.
With each of us doing what he or she can, we can collectively contribute to a tidal wave of positive change. As Joel Salation, the American farmer and author, has said: “We ask for too much salvation by legislation. All we need to do is empower individuals with the right philosophy and the right information to opt out en masse.”
